The Project
Overview
WAPDA's feasibility studies for the Thakot and Mohmand hydropower projects needed underground access into the rock mass for geological investigation.
Rafique Shah & Co. carried out the drilling, blasting and excavation of new adits at the Thakot (D3) site, and supplied explosives and excavated chambers in existing adits at Mohmand Dam. WAPDA has also certified the company's adit and chamber work at Hingol Dam in Balochistan.
Scope of Work
Thakot (D3), District Kohistan: drilling, blasting and excavation of new adits of 2.5 × 2.5 × 100 m
Mohmand Dam: supply of explosives and execution for a seismic refraction survey
Mohmand Dam: excavation of 10 ft × 8 ft × 25 m chambers in existing exploratory adits
Explosives handled under the company's licences and approved explosives vans

Planning
Adit and chamber dimensions, drilling pattern and charge plan set against WAPDA's investigation requirements.

Controlled blasting
Full-face rounds with delay firing to hold the adit profile and limit overbreak.

Survey support
Explosives supplied and fired for the seismic refraction survey at Mohmand.

Safety
Licensed handling, storage and transport of explosives, with post-blast inspection before re-entry.
